ArborProof is an Ontario tree service directory. This page explains what information we collect, why, and what we do with it. It’s short because we don’t collect much.

Information about people who visit this site

We use two systems to understand how people use this site: simple visitor statistics we built ourselves, and Google Analytics.

Our own visitor statistics

We built these ourselves; they don’t use cookies and don’t store anything in your browser. When you use ArborProof, they record:

  • The pages you view, how long a page stays open, and how far down it you scroll.
  • How you use the directory and guides — for example the town you search, the filters and sort order you pick, which company listings you open, when you click to see a phone number, send an email or visit a company’s website, and the answers you give the tree removal cost calculator.
  • General information about your visit — the website that linked you here (its name only), any campaign tag in the link, your device type (phone, tablet or computer), browser, operating system, screen size and language setting.

What we don’t record: your name, email address or phone number, your IP address, or your precise location. We use your IP address and browser details for a moment to create an anonymous visitor code that changes every day, so we can count how many different people visit on a given day without being able to recognise you on another day. The IP address itself is never saved.

We use this information to improve the site and to tell businesses how many people viewed or contacted their listing — as totals, never as information about you. We keep it for up to 13 months, then delete it.

Google Analytics

We also use Google Analytics, a service run by Google, to see overall trends in how people find and use the site. Unlike our own statistics above, Google Analytics uses cookies and can see your IP address and general location, and that information is subject to Google’s own privacy practices rather than ours. If you’d rather not be included, most browsers let you block third-party analytics, or you can install Google’s own opt-out browser add-on.

We do not require an account to browse, we do not ask homeowners for personal details, and we do not sell information about visitors to anyone.

Information about the businesses listed here

Every tree service and arborist consultant we could find in Ontario is listed, whether or not they asked to be. The information on those listings — business name, contact details, services, years in business, credentials, WSIB clearance status — is compiled from public sources: the businesses’ own websites, Google Business Profiles, Ontario’s public WSIB clearance register, and the International Society of Arboriculture’s public credential directory.

Some of that information relates to individual people, particularly for the many one-person operations in this trade. Where it does, we publish only what the business itself has already made public about its own operations.

If you are listed here and want something corrected or removed, see Corrections & Removals. We take those requests seriously and we don’t charge for them.

Information from businesses that claim their listing

When a business claims its listing, we collect the email address already on file for that business (we send a sign-in code to it — we never ask them to type in a new one), the edits they submit, and a record of who changed what and when.

Cookies

Our own visitor statistics don’t use cookies or store anything in your browser. Google Analytics does set cookies, to recognise repeat visits — see the section above. We also use a cookie to keep a business signed in after they claim their listing. We do not use advertising cookies and we do not run ad networks on this site.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers to run the site — hosting, database, email delivery, and Google Analytics for overall visitor trends. They process information on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes, except Google, which holds Google Analytics data under its own privacy practices. Our own visitor statistics stay in our own database and aren’t shared with anyone. We do not sell personal information.

We may disclose information where the law requires it.

Where it’s stored

Our hosting and database providers may store data outside Canada, including in the United States, where it is subject to the laws of that country.

Your rights

Under Canadian privacy law you can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and withdraw consent to our use of it. Write to privacy@arborproof.ca and we’ll respond within 30 days.

If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca.
