Cabling and bracing
Installing cables or rods to support weak branches or a split trunk so a valuable tree can be kept.
What it is
Cables are installed high in the canopy to limit how far weak limbs can move in the wind. Rods (bracing) are bolted through a split or weak joint to hold it together. It's often combined with pruning to lighten the load on the weak spot.
Cabling doesn't make a tree safe forever. The hardware should be inspected every year or two, and it's only worth doing on a tree that's otherwise healthy.
Signs you might need it
- A trunk that splits into two main stems in a tight V
- A visible crack where two big limbs meet
- A large limb that sways a lot or has partly split
- A valuable tree you'd like to keep but that has a weak spot
Good to know
If the tree is badly decayed, cabling isn't a fix. Get a risk assessment first to decide between support and removal.
Typical cost in Ontario
Before HST. Systems with several cables or rods on a large tree can run $700–$1,500, and complex jobs more. Plan for periodic inspections.

Ways to spend less
- Have an ISA Certified Arborist assess the tree first so you pay only for the support it needs
- Book cabling together with pruning to avoid paying twice to climb the tree
