What it is
When trees end up in a dispute, an arborist can document what happened, give an independent opinion, and put a dollar value on a damaged or removed tree using standard appraisal methods. Some also act as expert witnesses in court or at tribunals.
In Ontario, a tree whose trunk grows across the property line belongs to both neighbours. The Forestry Act says injuring or removing it without consent can bring fines, and courts have awarded large damages for wrongly cut trees.

Good to know
For a simple question about a shared tree, a short arborist report may be enough. A full court-ready appraisal takes much more time and costs more.
Typical cost in Ontario
No Ontario firm publishes rates for this work. As a rough reference only, US consulting arborists charge about $150–$475 an hour (US dollars). Ask for a written estimate that includes travel and court time.
