Tree appraisal
A written estimate of what a tree is worth in dollars, used for insurance claims, disputes, development and sales.
What it is
An appraisal puts a dollar value on a tree, using a recognized method that considers its species, size, condition and location. It is usually written by a certified arborist.
Appraisals are often needed after a tree is damaged or removed without permission, for an insurance or legal claim, or when a property with valuable trees is being developed or sold.
Signs you might need it
- A neighbour or contractor damaged or removed your tree
- You are making an insurance claim for a lost tree
- A mature tree may affect a property sale, development or legal dispute
- A municipality or court asks for the value of a tree
Good to know
A tree risk assessment is about whether a tree is likely to fail. An arborist report is about protecting or removing trees for a permit. An appraisal is about what a tree is worth.
Typical cost in Ontario
No Ontario price guide was reviewed for tree appraisals. Appraisals are usually priced per tree or by the hour, with a higher fee when the result may be used in court.
What pushes the price up or down
- Number of trees
- Whether the appraisal may be used for a claim or in court
- Site visit and travel
- Report detail required
Ways to spend less
- Ask which appraisal method the arborist uses
- Ask whether the report will be accepted by your insurer or the other party
No published Ontario prices were reviewed, so no range is given. Prices are typical ranges gathered from published Ontario price guides and company price pages in September 2026, before 13% HST. They’re a guide, not a quote: your price depends on your tree and your property. Get two or three written quotes, and check whether your city charges a permit fee.
*Estimates are based on pricing in a mid-sized Ontario city. Prices in your area may be higher or lower, so adjust accordingly.
